With a theme of “Protect your Paycheck: Vote!” McLean County’s Labor Day Parade, Bloomington’s largest, will march at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 5, from downtown Bloomington to Miller Park.
The Parade features local union marching units, high school bands, Illinois State University’s “Big Red Marching Machine,” elected and aspiring political figures and community organizations.
“Our parade theme is a reminder that elections can have economic consequences,” said Bloomington & Normal Trades & Labor Assembly (AFL-CIO) President Ronn Morehead. “It is easy to get distracted by social or other issues, but who represents us in Springfield and Washington can greatly impact job rights and your paycheck.”
Parade registration information is available on the Trades & Labor website, www.bntrades.org, or by calling 309-828-8813, or emailing matejka53@aol.com. The parade registration form is attached.
The parade registration fee is $15 for non-profit organizations, $20 for businesses, elected officials and candidates.
Bloomington has marked Labor Day since 1891, before the day was a federal holiday. In that year, Local workers marched to the home Adlai Stevenson I in Franklin Park. In 1892 Stevenson was elected the U.S.’s Vice-President. Parades continued through 1919, followed by picnics, and a parade again in 1927.
In 1935 the Parade was revived. The Parade did not march again until 1977. It has marched every year since then, except for one cancellation due to rain.
The Trades & Labor Assembly is the AFL-CIO Central Labor Council for all unions in McLean, Livingston, DeWitt and Logan counties.
