McLean County labor mourns the passing of David Penn (1950-2014), former business manager of Laborers Local 362 and Midwest Region Laborers Organizing Committee director. Here are links to news stories about David.
David's obituary:
BLOOMINGTON — David G. Penn, 64, of Bloomington, passed away at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 7, 2014) at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, after a long illness, surrounded by his family.
His celebration of life visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home in Bloomington. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army.
David was born on July 29, 1950, in Bloomington, the son of Paul S. and June Marble Penn.
He is survived by a son, Jeff (Cara) Penn, Bloomington; a daughter, Lacy (Zack) Fidler, Wheaton; two grandchildren, Blake and Kylie Fidler; his parents, Paul and June Penn; three siblings, Don (Norma) Penn, John (Mary) Penn and Linda (Mark) Drane, all of Bloomington; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a niece, Polly Jo Jaspers.
David was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong member of Laborer’s Local 362 in Bloomington, becoming a member at age 16. Ten years later, he was elected secretary-treasurer of the local and eventually was elected business manager of the local. David held several other positions locally, statewide and regionally and was currently the director of the Midwest Region Organizing Committee (MROC).
David was always there to help others and was a very giving person. He was active in many community/civic organizations and served on countless boards over the years. He was very proud to serve on the State of Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board and his affiliation with the Special Olympics, The Salvation Army and the Chamber of Commerce.
David enjoyed many things in life, including Notre Dame football, but most of all, he was a family
man and enjoyed being with his family. He loved teaching his children and their friends to fish as well as hunt for morel mushrooms. David was very proud to be a father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
